Illustrating children’s books is the greatest job in the world but if you’ve never done one before it can be a little overwhelming. That’s why I decided to put together a children’s book illustration class with Jerry’s Artarama in Raleigh. It will be held April 9th from 10:00am-4:00pm.

We’ll cover things like…How many pages should my book be be? How big? What do I need to do to submit my idea to a publisher? Should I self-publish? All I have is a manuscript and an idea can you help me, I don’t even know where to start?

Is This Class For Me?

If any of these questions sound familiar don’t worry this class is designed for specifically with you in mind. We cover all these questions and more. The only thing required is a manuscript, a sketch book and a positive attitude. Students of all abilities are welcome. Whether you are a superstar or just starting out .

  • We start the day by introducing ourselves and our projects.
  • I will give a short talk about publishing, my background and share how I work. I will also show examples of my work in different stages.

    This is one of the most important parts of the class. We only have 6 hours to work together
    so you will want to know what to do once the class is over and you are back in your studio.
    In this section of the class we will discuss your project and your goals for moving forward.
    We will set up a list of actions steps you will need to complete to reach those goals once the
    class has ended.

Part Three – Let’s Get to Work

  • Now that we have all our ducks in a row it’s time to get to work.
  • Students are given time to begin creating a rough dummy.

Lunch Break

  • Student resume work on their dummy
  • Class breaks again at 3:00 and students present their dummy
  • We share ideas for improvement
  • Class ends at 4:00 pm
  • Students receive a hand out with a list of FAQs, action steps and other goodies to help them on the road to getting published once the class is over.
