Q and A – The Best Way to Improve your Cartooning Skills.

Q:Hey Mr Bob.

My name is Tamara. I’m from Serbia and I love art. I am 14. I go to primary school, but I’d like to go to Art second school, soon, because I am very good at drawing and painting.
Anyway, I saw your blog, which is so cool, and I want to ask you for a little help. You can see some of mine drawings on my blog. Here is link. I hope you’ll like those. This blog is on Serbian, but never mind. Just see.
I would like if you can tell me how to be better cartooner and what I can fix about that.
Tamara

A: Hi Tamara,

Thanks for your question. I think your cartoons are great! I hope my answer won’t be too boring but the best way I can think of to improve cartooning skills is to study the basics. I went to an art college when I was younger where I took a lot of foundation courses like life drawing, color theory, perspective drawing, painting etc. The lessons I learned in those classes are things I still every time I create something new… whether I am making art on my computer or painting with a brush.
I know this probably sounds like, eat your vegetables so you will grow up to be big and strong, but it’s true. The broader your foundational skills the better artist you will become.  Take chances, be creative and have fun. Never be timid or afraid to try new things with your art. It’s the best way to learn.
Hope that helps. If you have a specific question about something you’re working on now or in the future please feel free to send me an email and I’ll do my best to help.
