Demo at Jerry’s Aratarama in Raleigh

Had a great time yesterday doing my art demo down at Jerry’s Artarama yesterday. I met some new friends and did a little bit of painting.

For this demo I busted out the old acrylics and had a blast painting “JellyFish”. It’s been a little while since I’ve done a large canvass. It sure felt nice to get away from the computer and actually get messy for a few hours. The paint was flying and we were having a blast. If you missed this demo don’t worry I’ve got a few more coming up as well as some cartooning classes I think you’ll really enjoy. Star Trek

I love the old Star Trek and I’m not talking about Next Generation or Deep Space 9. I’m talking about the real Star Trek. The one with William Shatner, Leonard Nemoy and DeForest Kelley. The ones I used to watch as reruns after school as a kid. I loved that show then and I still love it now.

So not too long ago I asked my friends at CI Sketchbook.com to do an illustration about Star Trek. Here’s mine. I haven’t seen the new movie yet. I’m sure it’s great and my kids will love it but to me there’s nothing better then an old episode of the original Star Trek.

Let's face it all the episodes were great but my all time favorite was the one where Kirk fights the Gorn.

Experimenting with Adobe Illustrator

So I’ve been experimenting with Adobe Illustrator a little bit lately. I wanted to try and find a way to bring some color to the hand inked look I’ve been having so much fun with lately. A couple of weeks back I rediscovered these really cool brush tip markers while shooting the videos for Jerry’s. It was all kind of by accident…

It was all kind of by accident. I’d used the brush tip markers once or twice over the years but wasn’t really in love with them. Then as we were shooting the videos I realized I wanted a heavier line with a more organic look. I remembered the brush markers I had sitting in my art kit and fished a few out. They turned out to be just what I was looking for.

Since then I’ve been experimenting with them a little bit and I’m really kind of digging the whole shaky Charles Schultz looking line I’m getting. At first I was attempting to color the illustrations in Adobe Photo-shop but that was WAY too much work. More recently I’ve been experimenting with Adobe Illustrator and the whole live paint thing (which for some reason I keep wanting to call smart fill). Anyhow I’m pretty sure I’ve got it just about worked out. I’ll keep you guys updated as I go.

Herbie Bear is the main character in the latest series of books I’ve been working on for Child’s World Publishing. The books, 25 in all, are now available and are listed with most major book retailers.

I had the good fortune to meet with one of the amazingly talented authors Cecilia Minden recently. We had a great time and hope to bring you lots more fun and creative
projects in the future.

Boomer and Halley Book #3 is now Available

Written and created by Mary Jane McKittrick and illustrated by me…Bob Ostrom, this series is about a cat named Halley’s Comet and an Australian Shepherd named Boomerang. They are both adopted by an older couple named Harold and Edna Sanders.

The Sanders live in a happy home at the end Dogwood Drive across from Copycat Lane in a little town called Shady Pines.
Harold runs his own hardware store with a soda fountain built right in. Edna works part time at the Shady Pines Community Center.

Boomer and Halley couldn’t be more different. Boomer originally a working dog from a ranch is a fun-loving, playful happy go lucky kind of character. Halley on the other hand is well, shall we say more “sophisticated”… yet somehow the two find a way to get along and become very good friends. It’s a very cute series with a great positive message especially for young readers.
